In June of 2002, I traveled to Fontamara to meet the congregation at the
church high in the hills of Haiti . It was a
challenge to reach the top of the "hill" where the church is located.
The service was beautiful with Pastor Colas leading the praise and
worship. A wonderful and dedicated evangelist/pastor, this wise Haitian
pastor loves the Lord fiercely and starts out walking very early on Sunday
morning to reach this church on time.
One of the most striking features that I noticed was the committed and faithful
young men who attended the church. They worshiped with all of their
might...it was a wonderful sight to see!
They were neat and clean. They have great respect for God's house, and
despite their economic deprivation, they are taught the importance of having a
positive outlook and self esteem.
Notice the white shirts! Unbelievable. Laundry is done under the
most primitive conditions, yet the white shirts and linens defy explanation!
Haitians are a proud and very industrious people. They work very hard at
excelling in anything they do.
Praise and worship is lively and musicians actively participate!
Pastor Colas walks up and down exhorting the congregation to praise and worship
vigorously!
In the photo, the women are dancing a group, very much like the Israelites in
the Old Testament when they
worshiped!
The choir is a very important element of worship.
They sing with all of their hearts. This is the Women's choir!
A visiting minister responded to my sermon and said how he had been praying in
asking God to give him courage to preach the message that I
preached.....tithing! It seems almost incredulous to encourage the saints
to tithe under such severe deprivation, but God's promises are greater than our
poverty and He is faithful to keep His Word! If one does not sow, one
cannot reap! The people rejoiced at being reminded about His
promises throughout the Bible.
